George A. Clarke

Memorial services for George A. Clarke will be Feb. 8, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Lusk Elks Lodge #1797, 602 S. Elm Street in Lusk.

George was born to George W. and Ora Mae Clarke on April 8, 1918, in Sioux City, Iowa. Following his fatherís death his family moved to Glen, Neb. When he was 14, his family left the Glen area, leaving George there to fend for himself. George put himself through high school by working for the local mortician and graduated from Crawford High School in 1938. Following graduation he went to work in Harrison, Neb., where he met and married Della Mae Jordan. To this union was born their daughter Sharron.

He went to work for the Bureau of Land Management and obtained a Junior degree in Civil Engineering while working for them. The B.L.M. moved them several times to different states during the course of his work with them.

In 1946 George, Della and Sharron moved to Harrison, Neb. There he purchased a filling station and motel. In the following years he owned and operated an insurance company, real estate company, vehicle dealership, securities brokerage, and a dance hall. After having those different businesses, he then bought and ran the local newspaper with no training at all. In the years to follow he won state awards for that division of newspaper. After closing the newspaper, he ran the family ranch outside of Harrison for several years. In 1962 he ran for the office of governor of the state of Nebraska.

When he was 46 years old, after taking a special test, which entitled him to enter directly into law school without taking pre-law, he obtained a Juris Doctor degree in law. He became a licensed attorney in Wyoming and Nebraska and opened a law practice to serve the people in Lusk and Harrison, Neb. He and his family moved to Lusk in the late 1960s.

During his years as an attorney he served as Justice of the Peace, City Attorney, Municipal Judge, Bar Commissioner for the Sixth Judicial District, Attorney for the School District and Public Defender.

He was a member of the Niobrara County Historical Society, Lusk-Niobrara County Ambulance Fund, Medical Facility Study Committee for the feasibility of a nursing home in Lusk, Eastern Wyoming Mental Health Board, nine State Electric Association Board, Selective Service System of Wyoming, State Committeeman of Niobrara Republican Committee and the Niobrara Development Company. He was the Executive Director of the Wyoming Municipal Power Agency, Member of the Scottish Rite, Member of Masons, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine and Past Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge #1797.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Les, Frank, and Al; and one sister, Dot. He is survived by his wife and his daughter Sharron, of Lusk, and numerous nieces and nephews.
