Beulah Nadine Yarbrough
Beulah Nadine (Pierce) Yarbrough, age 98, of Lusk, passed away Feb. 2, 2008 at the Niobrara Health and Life Center. Graveside services will be Feb. 7, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Lusk Cemetery, with Pastor Tom Strock officiating.
Beulah was born to Marion Franklin Pierce and Mollie Pearl (Goff) Pierce, Jan. 11, 1910, in Nemaha County, Nebr., on the Crummel Farm, about halfway between Brownville and Nemaha, Nebr.
In 1919 the family moved to Northwest Nebr., where she received her education in country schools, and went to high school in Crawford, Nebr., living with her grandparents in Nebraska City, Nebr., her senior year.
On Dec. 2, 1929, Beulah married Sergeant Charlie F. Yarbrough in Chadron, Nebr. During his army career, they made a lot of moves: first from Ft. Robinson, Nebr. to Ft. Bragg, N. Carolina; then to Ft. Lewis, Wash., and then to Ft. Sill, Okla., where Charlie went to Officers Training School and came out a Second Lieutenant. They called the ones that graduated then "ninety day wonders". At that point they moved back to Ft. Lewis, Wash.; then back to Camp Roberts, Calif.; then back to Ft. Bragg, N.C., and from there Charlie went overseas in 1944. When he came back they moved back to Ft. Sill; then to Ft. Ord, Calif; the back to Ft. Lewis, Wash. where he retired after 23 years of service.
Charlie and Beulah bought their first home in Tacoma, Wash., where she loved her nice big yard with all her pretty shrubs and flowers. She was an avid cat lover with 17 strays. Her first two cats were from a pet store.
Charlie retired from the Washington State Security Department in 1965, and in 1968 they moved to Lusk and bought their home here so Beulah could be close to some of her relatives. Beulah remained in Lusk until her death, spending her last two years at Niobrara Health and Life Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her mother and father; her step-father, Ruel Strait; sister Pearl E. Owens of Lusk; two brothers, Clarence G. Strait of Lusk and James H. Strait of Crawford, Nebr; one nephew, Larry R. Owens of Lusk; and one great-great-niece, Tabitha Kristi Johnson of Lusk.
Survivors include two nieces, Lola M. Dobson and husband Denny of Lusk; and Mima Lue Dodd of Crawford, Nebr.; one nephew, Donald L. Strait, Sr. and wife Betty of Paradise, Tex.; one cousin, Dorothy Iolene Britton, of Casper; great-nieces Katharine and husband Jim Ruscitto, Corpus Christie, Tex.; Kristine Phillips and friend Steve, Cheyenne; Kimberly Dobson and friend Kenny, Montgomery, Tex; great-nephew Kevin and wife Sandra Dobson, Lusk; great-great nieces Laura and Vanessa Phillips, Cheyenne; Ashley Dobson, Kansas City, Kan.; great-great nephew Steven R. Johnson, Lusk; great-great-great nephew Kaleb Michael; Cheyenne; great-great-great nieces Jaidyn Mae of Cheyenne and Darrienne Brieze of Ft. Collins (she referred to Kaleb and Jaidyn as her babies, always asking "How are my babies?"); and special friends Linda Nacervicz of Tacoma, Wash. and Mary Hoblit of Lusk.
She will be greatly missed by family and friends. Lola and Denny's aunt was a very special aunt and their second mother after the passing of both of their mothers.
