Obituary

On September 26, 1903, the grim messenger - death - claimed another loved one, our little Nellie Newlin, aged 2 years, 4 months and 20 days. The little one had been ailing for some time and everything was done to soothe her suffering, her parents despairing, took her to Harrison to seek medical advice. Owing to the contagious disease at the hotels the parents were in doubt where to stop, when the hospitable and sympathetic McGinley kindly threw open his doors to them. There the little sufferer had the very best care and nursing, besides medical aid from several doctors, but nothing could allay the hand of the destroyer, and after three weeks of intense suffering the little darling was released and the spirit borne to the arms of the blesses Redeemer, who said, "Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for such is the kingdom of heaven." Funeral services were conducted by Elder Clark at the M. E. church, the text selected from Isaiah 40:11 - "He Shall Gather Lambs in His Arms." The discourse was very practical and comforting, followed by songs the darling used to sing - "Precious Jewels" and "When the Roll is Called up Yonder, I'll be There," after which the remains, carried by the little girl pall bearers, were conveyed to the Harrison cemetery, followed by a large procession of sympathizing friends and laid to rest. Our beautiful little Nellie's stay with us was short, still her life was so bright and winning that many sweet memories of her loving acts and sweet songs will ever live with those who knew her best.

We had a little treasure once,
She was our joy and pride;
We loved her, ah! perhaps too much,
For soon she slept and died.

All is dark within our dwelling,
Lonely are our hearts today;
For the one we loved so dearly,
Has forever passed away.
