Melvin Robert Grote

Funeral services for Melvin Robert Grote, 79, of Harrison, were held Sept. 24, 2003, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Harrison. Burial was at the Harrison Community Cemetery.

Melvin Grote died at his home, Sept. 19, 2003, of cancer.

Melvin was born on Oct. 9, 1923, at Wilcox, Neb., to William and Emma Grote. At the age of five he moved with his family to a ranch north of Harrison.

On Nov. 2, 1952, he married Madeline Bruegger of Lusk.

Melvin lived his entire life in Sioux County. He purchased a ranch north of Harrison in 1949, a farm near Bridgeport in 1959, and the 3-3 ranch south of Harrison in 1969, plus other parcels of land in the area. He was instrumental in helping young people get started in agriculture. He was an early member of the Sandhills Cattle Association, Sioux County Fair Board and the Nebraska State High School Rodeo Association. He also served on the Sioux County Board of Regents for 13 years, and was a director of the Harrison Volunteer Fire Department.

Melvin helped build the Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he was an active member and held many offices over the years. He enjoyed roping, a good game of horseshoes or baseball, fishing and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife Madeline; three daughters, Bonnie Anderson of Morrill, Neb., Connie Shay of Mitchell, Neb., and Sandie Geiser of Harrison; one son, Bill Grote of Harrison; six grandsons; two granddaughters; two sisters, Elaine Walker and Alda Engebretsen; one brother, Ronald Grote; and a sister-in-law, Ola Mae Grote, all of Harrison.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Twila; his parents; brother Earl; and sister Alice Rabe.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Chadron Home Health and Hospice Service, the Harrison Fire Department or Ambulance, or the Redeemer Lutheran Church. Donations may be sent to the Security First Bank of Harrison.
