Last Rites Held For Evelyn Knori
The funeral of Evelyn Christian Knori, whose untimely death occurred in Lusk last week, was held Friday afternoon, May 8, with interment in the Lusk Cemetery. A private prayer service was held at the Peet Mortuary, with Rev. Lenker of the First Methodist Church of Harrison in charge, and public services at the Congregational Church.
The large number of relatives and friends gathering from far and near, and the many beautiful floral pieces gave evidence of the esteem in which the deceased was held. A mixed quartet, composed of Mrs. Edna DeCastro, Mrs. Harriet Smith, Mr. Ford Kuns and Mr. J.M. Hungate, sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "In the Garden." Mrs. J.P. Watson accompanied on the piano.
Pallbearers were Arthur Keller, Lester Mead, Vernon Chard, Maurice Keel, Ted Lohr and Roger Percival.
Ida Evelyn Christian was born on December 1, 1909, at Kirtley, Wyo. She grew to womanhood on her father's ranch on Indian Creek, Wyo. On April 23, 1928, at Newcastle, Wyoming, she was united in marriage with Emanuel Knori of Harrison, Nebraska. To this union was born one child, James Samuel, on November 9, 1929, at Grand Island, Nebr. The husband and son are left to mourn her loss. Besides these, her father and mother, James W. and Clara Nell Christian of Hat Creek, Wyo.; two sisters, Mrs. Lloyd Schaefer of Lusk, and Edith Mae at home; five brothers, George of Lusk, Frank, John, Bruce and Charles at home; her grandfather, J.J. ZumBrunnen of Kirtley, and a grandmother, Mrs. Eva E. Christian of Alhambra, Calif., many other relatives and a host of friends grieve for her dearly departure.
Evelyn, as she was always called by her friends, passed her childhood days on her father's ranch on Indian Creek. She attended rural school there, graduated from Lusk High School in 1927 and later attended Teachers College at Chadron, Neb. She taught for one year on Indian Creek and then married "Mannie" Knori of Harrison, Neb.
The young couple have been engaged in cattled raising near the Wyoming-Nebraska line. For the past two years they spent each cattle shipping season in Sioux City, Iowa, where Mr. Knori was brand inspector.
For some time her health had not been good and on April 23, 1936, Dr. Reckling of Lusk operated in the hope of improving her condition, but from the first gave little hope, and on May 5 she passed from pain and suffering to peace and rest.
On May 8, a large gathring of friends and relatives saw her body laid to rest in the little cemetery at Lusk, Wyoming. They turned sadly away from the new heaped mound covered with so many flowers tendered by loving friends.
(Written by Margaret Oestreich)
She is gone and your hearts are lonely.
And rebellious tears still fall,
For the shining spirit that answered
So early the Master's call.
But hearts sore tried by parting
Look thru the shadows gray,
And see her dear form wending
Along a golden way.
A path that leads to brightness,
Surcease from earthly pain,
Where on the hills eternal
You'll meet her once again.
On earth her place is vacant
And none may in it dwell;
But her tender spirit watches
O'er those she loved so well;
And heaven's brightest glory
A shadow still must hold,
Unitl the ones she loved on earth
Her waiting arms enfold.
(By Blanche Schaefer)
We never knew until she'd gone
How much she really meant,
How empty life could be
Without her always there
Until she left us in the dawn,
Smiling to us as she went.
And now that she is gone,
We think back o'er the years,
And see our happy childhood days,
The life we shared along the way.
And though we cannot cease to mourn,
We try to dry away the tears.
She'd lived her life so well,
Always happy with what it gave,
So helpful, kind-hearted and true.
Always knowing the right thing to do.
Thinking of us with heart so brave,
Even as death's dark shadows fell.
We sorrowfully saw her put away,
Beneath that flower decked mound,
Away from all earth's care and pain.
Without her life cannot be the same.
But in our hearts we found
A prayer "to meet her There some day."
