In Memoriam

The following article, published in the Lusk Herald, is courtesy of the Wyoming Newspaper Project.

Mrs. Lafayette Evans died in Lusk Saturday morning, Jan. 13th, 1912, aged 72 years, 4 months and 23 days. Her maiden name was Elewesa Minor and she first saw the light of day at Moumouth, Illinois, August 12th, 1839. In 1857 she and Mr. Evans were married at Aledo, Illinois, where they continued to live for some time and later moved to Albany, Mo., where in 1878 Mrs. Evans became a member of the Campbellite church at that place. In 1887 they decided to risk their fortunes in the west and came to Wyoming and settled in Lusk. To their union there were born eight children, five girls an three boys, all of whom survive their mother except her son, James, who died here last year. Those who survive her are her husband, once a proud graduate of Yale, but now bowed down with his almost 77 years of life and a confirmed invalid; Mrs. C. W. Harrison and Mrs. E. P. Cameron, of Albany, Mo.; Mrs. Pearl Whitman, of Emmet, Nebr.; Parker Evans, of Alaska; J. O. Evans, Mrs. G. D. Edwards and Mrs. Grace Hobbs, of Lusk; besides six grand-children.

The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Congregational church of which congregation Mrs. Evans was a member, the Rev. S. Burman Long preaching the sermon and the choir rendering three old and much loved hymns. There was a generous outpouring of friends and neighbors to do honor to the memory of one of Lusk's oldtimers. The remains were interred in Lusk cemetery, the following gentlemen acting as pallbearers: H. C. Snyder, James Mashek, P. E. Barber, J. C. Sturman, John H. Weaklen and Lee Haynes.
