Obituary

The following article, published in the Lusk Herald, is courtesy of the Wyoming Newspaper Project.

Lafayette Evans died of paralysis in Lusk Monday morning May 6th, 1912 aged 77 years, 1 month and 14 days. Mr. Evans was born in Lincoln County, Ohio, on March 22, 1835; His father was Major John Evans who was one of the prominent men of Perry township, Ohio, for half a century or more. He patriotically devoted himself to the interests of the country during the "great rebellion."

In 1857 Mr. Lafayette Evans married Miss Elewisa Minor at Aledo, Ill., where he held the position of Professor of Geography until 1870, when he moved with his family to Iowa where he lived seven years. In 1887 he moved to Albany, Mo. where he lived until coming farther west. In 1887 they decided to risk their fortunes in the west and came to Wyoming and settled in Lusk.

Mr. and Mrs. Evans shared the trials of life together until January 3rd, 1912, when Mrs. Evans died.

To their union were born eight children, five daughters and three sons, all of whom survive except James who died here last year.

Those living are Mrs. C. W. Harrison and Mrs. E. P. Cameron of Albany, Mo.; Mrs. Pearl Whitman of Emmet, Nebr.; Parker Evans of Alaska; J. O. Evans, Mrs. G. D. Edwards and Mrs. Grace Hobbs, of Lusk.

The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Congregational Church, the Rev. S. Burman Long officiating. The choir beautifully rendered three much loved hymns. The casket was covered with flowers.

There was a generous outpouring of friends and neighbors to do honor to one of Lusk's old-timers. The body was interred in the Lusk cemetery. The following gentlemen were pall-bearers, C. M. Larson, H. H. Roberts, O. J. Demmon, John Weaklen, James Mashek and Frank DeCastro.
