Janice Kaye Gilbert

Janice Kaye Gilbert was born Oct. 9, 1956 in Chadron, Neb. to Tony and Florence (Weihe) Chasek. She was the youngest child, joining Richard, Bonnie and Dale. Jan graduated from Chadron High School in 1972 at the age of 16 and attended Eastern Wyoming College on a rodeo scholarship, where she earned an associate's degree in veterinary technology. Jan loved horses and enjoyed competing in barrel racing and roping.

Jan married James Hart April 15, 1977 and became a widow when he was killed in a car accident Oct. 2, 1981. She married Frank Edward Gilbert on May 21, 1983 and became the step-mother of four children, Chris, Wendi, Shannon and Brian.

Jan and Ed moved from Lusk to Torrington after Chris graduated from high school, and then on to El Centro, California, before settling in Amarillo, Texas. They were working together in Topeka, Kansas at the time of her passing on August 10th 2009 in Kansas City, Kansas after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Jan's family was her joy, and she will be greatly missed by all of them. She was able to realize a dream of taking them all to Hawaii for Christmas of 2008.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, her brother, Richard, and an unborn daughter.

She is survived by her husband, Frank (Ed); son Chris, his wife Lisa, and their children, Joshua, Daniel, Moriah and Keilah of Colorado Springs, Colo.; son Shannon and his wife Racheal of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter Wendi Dutcher of Douglas, Wyo., her sons Tom and Chance, and her step-daughters Nicole, Monica, and Laura and their children; and son Brian, his wife Leslie of Peoria, Ill., and their unborn daughter, due in November; and her siblings Dale and Bonnie; and countless friends.

At Jan's request, there was no funeral. Her family and friends met for a picnic-style dinner and celebrated her life at the Niobrara Senior Center on Friday, Aug. 14.
