Arloph H. "Mike" Chard

Arloph Herold "Mike" Chard of Lusk died at the Natrona Memorial Hospital in Casper Saturday, May 18, 1985, from injuries received Oct. 14, 1983, in Pinedale while on a hunting accident. He was 76.

Mr. Chard was born Nov. 7, 1908, the son of Oscar and Rosabelle Swope Chard at Crawford, Neb.

When he was very young, his parents moved to a homestead near Whitman, Wyo., where he spent his early years. His mother died when he was 12, and he and his brother, "Bunny," lived with their grandparents during the winter to attend school. During the summer, he worked on ranches from the age of nine, and began working fulltime on ranches at age 13.

Chard and Gladys Finley grew up in the same community and attended school at Pine Knott. They were married May 17, 1941, at Chadron, Neb.

In 1943, he began working in the oil field at Lance Creek, where they made their home until his accident in 1983. After he was in the hospital for eight months, the couple moved to the Ranger Apartments in Lusk.

His spare time was spent working as a gun smith and with leather. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. The Chards were honored with pictures and stories of their lives in several sports magazines.

He liked to tell of his hunting trips and was always ready to lend a helping hand to people in need.

He and his wife were active in the pageant "The Legend of the Rawhide Buttes" and later drove horses for the Historical Society stagecoach in the Niobrara County Fair parade in Lusk many times.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys; sister-in-law, Marg Chard; stepmother, Margaret Haight, aunts and numerous nephews and nieces.

The Chards had no children of their own, but had nieces and nephews with them much of the time.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Bunny.

Services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Peet Mortuary in Lusk. The Rev. Jerold Romprey officiated. Burial was in the Crawford Cemetery.

Pallbearers were his nephews, David, Matthew and James Bennett, Mike Cronin, Marvin Harding and Clifford Seegrist.
