The Lusk Herald
February 28, 1901

The announcement that little John Raffin, infant and only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Raffin, had joined the innumerable majority of the restful and silent, confronted our quiet neighborhood the 21st inst and to all it came as a shock of sad surprise as the little fellow only endured the ravages of that dread disease, scarlet fever, four days.

Little John, aged 1 year, 7 months and 17 days, was a bright promising child and the pride and joy of his parents, and with him many fond and cherished hopes lie buried. We, with the entire community, express our sympathy to the bereaved in their sad hour of affliction. Owing to the contagion, the burial was private. Mrs. Nolan read the burial service and little John was laid to rest on the hill near the house.

God in love, we know, has hushed
Our dear little John's brief weeping,
Oh, how peaceful, pale and still
In his narrow bed he's sleeping.
And no sigh of anguish sore
Heaves his little bosom more.

In this world of care and pain,
Lord Thou woulds't no longer leave him;
To the sunny heavenly plain
Thou dos't now with joy receive him;
Thou the gain of death we prove
Though Thou take what most we love.
