Ann "Beatrice" Ella Avenell

Funeral mass for Beatrice Avenell, 88-year-old former Niobrara County woman, who passed away early Monday morning, Jan, 7, 1991, at the Bethesda Care Center in Worland, Wyo., will be held Thursday, Jan. 10, 1991, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Father Joseph Daley officiating. Rosary will be recited Wednesday, (today) at 7 p.m. at St. John's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Custer Battlefield with graveside services at 2 p.m. Thursday. Memorials may be made to St. John's Catholic Church, in care of Adams Funeral Home who is in charge of arrangements.

Ann "Beatrice" Ella Avenell was born on Feb. 8, 1902 in Sioux County, Nebraska, to Christ and Gertie Marking Ruffing. She lived on a ranch near Hat Creek, Wyo., with her family until she attended the University if Wyoming the summer of 1922 and received her teaching certificate. She then taught at Blizzard Flats near Mule Creek, Wyo.

On April 28, 1923, she married Harry Lee Avenell in Hot Springs, S.D. and they homesteaded in Niobrara County, Wyo. until they retired in 1958 and moved to Story.

She was a devout Catholic in Story, Sheridan and in Buffalo. She did volunteer work at the hospital in Sheridan and was active in the Story Women's Club.

Survivors include one sister, Monica Erny of Alliance, Neb., and one brother, Jennings Ruffing of Lusk. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters, and four brothers.
