Milton Howard Himes was born Apr. 1, 1928 in Lusk, Wyo. to Emerson Howard Himes and Alma Helen (Hitz) Himes. He died Aug. 10, 2013 at Niobrara Health and Life Center following a lengthy illness.

Milton was raised on the family ranch in the Hat Creek area north of Lusk. He attended Niobrara County High School, graduating in 1946. While attending high school, he “batched it” by living in town and working at the Western Repair Shop and wrangling Wayne Hales’s cattle after school. Following graduation, Milton was employed by North Western Engineering, working in Lusk, Wyo.; Evanston, Wyo.; and Rawlins, Wyo. In 1950, Milton entered the United States Armed Services, Army division. He was stationed at Camp Poke, Louisiana during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1951 to return to the family ranch due to family illness.

Milton married Helen Jassman in 1950. They divorced in 1955. Milton married Dorothy Dobson Church in 1956, and became a father to Barbara Ann (Bobbie). To this union three children were born: Cheryl Lynn, David Wayne and Bruce Howard. To support his growing family, Milton worked for Bill Potter, Brown Oil Company, Crazy Charlie’s Truck Stop, and Dale Leimser trucking oil, gas and diesel for many years. He also worked for the Wyoming State Department for a short period of time. In addition to his numerous jobs, Milton was employed by the Town Of Lusk as the Street Superintendent. He retired in 1989, after 33 years of service. His son Bruce holds this title to this date, and the job was always a topic of discussion at every visit. He also served on the Lusk Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

On Aug. 11, 1972 Milton married Patricia Ann Goble in Lusk, Wyo. He increased his family with daughters Rolinda Arnold and Holly Castano, and son Dajo Castano. To this union one child was born, Misty Renee.

Milton was preceded in death by his parents, Alma and Emerson Himes, and son Dajo Castano. He is survived by his wife Patricia of Lusk; children: Barbara Stallman and husband Willis of Lusk, Cheri Thompson and husband Cody of Lusk, David Himes and wife Marnie of Magna, Utah., Bruce Himes and wife Lori of Lusk, Misty Himes of Torrington, Rolinda Arnold of Ogden, Utah., and Holly Castano of Lander, Wyo.; sister Mryna Golden and husband Bob of Scottsbluff, Neb.; special honorary daughter Jennifer Himes Penfield and husband Dick of Lusk, Wyo.; 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Milton loved his family, his heritage, and his community. He taught his children and grandchildren a strong work ethic. He accepted people for what they were and loved unconditionally.

Visitation will be held at Pier Funeral Home Wednesday Aug. 14 from 4 - 6 p.m. Services will be held Thursday Aug. 15 at the Niobrara County Fairgrounds at 2 p.m. with Pastor Tom Strock officiating. Coffee will be served at the First Baptist Church following the services.

Memorials are suggested to the Niobrara Senior Center Sunshine Center, PO Box 928, Lusk, WY 82225-0928, or to the First Baptist Church of Lusk, Wyo.

Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
