Mrs. Browning Dies Saturday

Mrs. Charles C. (Gail H.) Browning of Cheyenne and formerly of Lusk, died at her home Saturday. Funeral services were held in Cheyenne Wednesday from the First Congregational Church with the Rev. Leslie Deinstadt officiating. Mrs. Browning had undergone surgery earlier this month.

Born in Indiana, Mrs. Browning came to Niobrara County in June 1911 as a bride. She and Mr. Browning homesteaded and taught in both the East and West Pleasant Ridge (Kirtley) schools in the 1911-1912 term. In 1912 Mr. Browning was elected the first Niobrara County Superintendent of Schools and Mrs. Browning taught in Lusk. She taught in the Lusk schools until 1918 when she resigned to care for their oldest daughter. In the 1917-18 term she was Lusk Grade School principal.

Numerous local people attended the funeral.

Brownings celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Cheyenne last June 11.

Mrs. Browning was a past state president of the Parent Teachers Association, a past grand guardian of Job's Daughters and a member of the Psychology Club and League of Women Voters.

She was active in the Past Matrons of the Order of Eastern Star and a member of the First Congregational Church for 28 years. She retired last year after singing in the church choir for many years.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Browning is survived by four children, Mrs. Thane Baldwin of Cheyenne, Mrs. John Fowler of El Paso, Tex., Jack Browning of Sacramento, and Duane Browning of Reno, Nev.

Also surviving are nine grandchildren; a sister and a brother, Mrs. Bernice Chaffin of Rapid City, S. Dak., and Archie Chaffin of Fort Wayne, Ind.
