Anna Alter

Funeral service for Anna Alter, area resident since 1908, was held April 3 at Peet Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Frank Blish officiating. Mrs. Alter died at Niobrara Nursing Home March 31.

Anna Louise (Hanson) Alter was born September 20, 1886, in Flekkefjord, Norway, the daughter of Johann and Sere Hanson. Her father was merchant seaman who sailed to New York as one of his ports. Anna attended school in Flekkefjord and was confirmed in the Lutheran Church there.

She came to the United States in 1904 with her friend, Julie Peterson and stayed in La Crosse, Wis., for several years. In 1908 she and Josephine Reinsestson came to Lusk. Anna worked in the old Northwestern Hotel as a waitress and homesteaded northeast of Lusk near the L. T. Larson family. She and Carrie Brown ran a boarding house in Lusk for a short time but she quit in 1915 to marry Boynton E. (Bunt) Alter on April 26 at Chadron. She then moved out to the Alter homestead south of town.

For years, she and Bunt were an important part of the Rawhide community. In 1967 they moved to a mobile home on the Roy Turnbull ranch and in 1975 entered the Niobrara Nursing Home. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 1980.

Active bearers were Martin Glandt, Harry Brown, Carl Hansen, Loren Bing Barr, Don Hoy and Jimmy Shane. Minerva Watson was organist while Joy Kaltenheuser sang "In the Sweet By and By" and "Beautiful Isle".

She is survived by her husband Bunt and her daughter, Mrs. Roy (Ione) Turnbull; a granddaughter Mrs. Tom (JoAnn) Downing and two great-grandsons James and John Downing.

Interment was in Lusk Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Niobrara Nursing Home.
