Hazel Nilsen died June 30, 1999

She was born May 19, 1914, at Van Tassell, to Berton and Lucetta Roberts.

Hazel graduated from Hay Springs (Neb) High School in 1931. She later attended the School of Commerce at North Platte, Neb. She joined the Navy in 1944 and was one of the first group of WAVES stationed at the Naval Ordinance Test Station, China Lake. After her discharge, she remained at China Lake as a Management Technician until she retired in 1978.

In 1951 she married Maurice Coleman who preceded her in death in 1999. She married her present husband, Charles Nilsen, on St. Patrick's Day 1993.

Although unable to have children, Hazel was a spiritual mother for hundreds over her lifetime. Every life she touched was enriched by her caring ways and sense of humor.

She was active in community including the Literacy Council, Protestant Women of the Chapel, Girls Scouts, Gem and Mineral Society, Maturango Museum and American Legion.

She is survived by her husband; step-daughter and step-son, Carolyn and Jim Shepherd; and numerous nieces and nephews of the Roberts, Simon, Gusman, Fraser, and Goertler families. She was preceded in death by one brother and five sisters.
