John Norton

Services were held Friday Aug 1 in Lovell for former Lance Creek resident John Norton, 74. He died Monday, July 28, 1986 at a Billings, MT hospital following an illness of several months.

Norton was born in January 1912. He began working for Ohio (now Marathon) Oil Company in Cowley in July 1943. He and his wife Jean, and their three children came to Lance Creek in 1956 where he was an operator of the gas plant until it was automated and he became a pumper.

John retired from Marathon in March 1972 after 29 years of service after he and his wife and niece Virlene Norton, who was living with them moved to Lovell. While at Lance Creek, the couple were members of the Tanglefoot Square Dance Club, and were active with the Church of Latter Day Saints. John enjoyed gardening and raised appaloosa horses for a number of years.

Mrs. Norton died in December 1974. John later married Clair Frye of Manville at the LDS Church in Lusk on September 14, 1981.

Survivors include his wife, Clair, of Lovell; one daughter, Joan (Mrs. Darwin) Johnson of Lahabre, CA; two sons, John Dean Norton, Jr. of Salt Lake City, UT. and Lyle Norton of Sacramento, CA, three step-children, Jerri Barret of Casper, Sarah Munson of Montana, and Merlin Frye of Douglas, and several grandchildren and step-grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. John Overman of Manville were among those attending final rites in Lovell on Friday.
