H. L. Bushnell Died Hemingford, Nebr.

Howard Lewis Bushnell, pioneer of western Nebraska, passed away at the home of his granddaughter, Miss Gwendola Canfield, in Hemingford, Nebr., on January 17th. If he had lived 12 hours longer he would have been 89 years of age.

Mr. Bushnell was well known here having lived in Lusk for some time, and he was also connected with his son, Charlie in the store business at Keeline and in 1914 moved to Van Tassell where he again entered the store business until 1917 when he moved to a ranch near Lance Creek.

In 1929 the family moved back to their old home at Hemingford, Nebr. Mrs. Bushnell passed away in 1932 and since that time he has made his home with his grand-daughter.

Mr. Bushnell was born in Johnsonville, Ohio, Jan. 18, 1850. He was married to Miss Kit Clark at Vienna, Ohio in Sept. 1876 and to this union nine children were born, six of whom preceeded him in death.

Fifty-two years ago he came to western Nebraska locating near Hay Springs, Nebr.

Mr. Bushnell's lineage is a very fine one and equally interesting. He was a great-great grandson of a signer of the Declaration of Independence - Charles Treat, for whom his son was named. He himself was the namesake of the great theologian, Horace Bushnell. His beautiful sister was the "Keturah" of the books written by her distinguished husband, Wm. E. Barton, and she was the mother of the famous Bruce Barton.

Funeral services were held in Hemingford and burial made in the cemetery at that place.

Surviving him are two brothers, Linus Bushnell of Farmdale, Ohio, George Bushnell of Dedham, Mass.; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Brown of Hemingford, Nebr., and two sons, Bert L. Bushnell of Portland, Ore., and Ira E. Bushnell, Lance Creek, Wyo., twelve grand-children and two great grand-children.
