Funeral services for Margaret L. Garhart, 86, were held on Monday, Aug. 16 at the Ft. Laramie Presbyterian Church with Pastor Robert Frye officiating. Burial followed at the Fr. Laramie Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Ft. Laramie Rescue Unit. Margaret died at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004.

She was born March 19, 1918 in Peru, Nebr., the daughter of John and Leona (Kelley) Petersen. Margaret came to Wyoming in 1920 in a covered wagon as a small child with her family. She attended country schools, Petersen School and Flat Top School until the eighth grade.

She married Ernest Garhart on Dec. 3, 1932 in Lusk. Of this marriage six children were born and a "special" nephew was raised.

The couple lived in or near Lance Creek and Lusk until 1958 when they moved to Ft. Laramie. Garhart operated restaurants in Lusk, Lance Creek and Ft. Laramie most of her life, retiring in 1998. She enjoyed looking after her family.

Margaret is survived by two sons: Ed Garhart and his wife Louise and Danny Garhart, all of Ft. Laramie; "special" nephew Harold Petersen of Ft. Laramie; a brother John Petersen of Tacoma, Wash.; three sisters Laura Clark of Washington, Stella Clark of Salt Lake City, Utah and Dorothy Williams of Washington; ten grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and special friends, John and Margo Morrill of Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son Charles, three infant children, one great-grandchild, her parents and several brothers and sisters.

Colyer Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
