James Arthur Ferris

James Arthur Ferris, age 62, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998 at Rapid City Regional Hospital after a short illness.

He was born June 1, 1935 to Arthur and Gladys Walts Ferris in Rushville, Neb., and in 1936 moved with his family to RedBird, Wyo. Jim received his education in Manville, Wyo. In 1953, at age 18, he enlisted in the National Guard until 1959, when he received an honorable discharge. He then joined the United States Army Reserves until his honorable discharge in 1962.

Jim came to live in Newcastle in 1956 and made his home there until he died. During those years he has worked for just about everyone. Ranchers, oilfields, county employee, he could fix or build anything. He loved children and was involved in many of their projects. He was very much involved in community activities. This little man with the big heart will be greatly missed by all.

We believe that if anyone would like to remember him, it would fitting to donate to the kids rodeo, 4-H or youth activities.

He is survived by two sisters, Elsie Largent of Glasgow, Ken. and Mary Tschacher of Manville; three brothers, Cliff Ferris of Lusk, Lawrence Ferris of Torrington and Billy Ferris of National City, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two young siblings.

Graveside services were held on Jan. 19, at 10:30 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery. There was cake and coffee immediately following the service at Michael's Senior Citizen's Center.
