Margaret Brock Hanson

A memorial service for Margaret Brock Hanson was held at the Harold Jarrard Park Building in Kaycee, on Jan. 3 at 1 p.m.

Margaret Julia was born in Buffalo to J. Elmer and Janet Thom Brock, the youngest of three, with two older brothers, John and Culbertson. Margaret was raised on the family ranch near Mayowarth, west of Kaycee. Her father taught her how to shoot a gun. Once she shot the head off a rattlesnake with a pistol, much to the pride of her father.

She attended grade school and high school with her brothers in Buffalo. She fondly remembered running home from school to her grandparents' house, stopping for one of her grandfather's stories, then running across the alley to her other grandparent's home. She loved listening to their stories and wrote some of them down.

After graduating high school, she attended Goucher College in Baltimore. Margaret also attended the University of Wyoming. She became an apprentice to a photographer in Denver. Moving back to Buffalo as a professional photographer, she owned and operated her own photography shop.

Margaret Brock married Dan Hanson on May 18, 1943. They ranched on Young Woman Creek, north of Lusk until 1954 when they moved to the Kaycee ranch after her father died.

Along with raising six children, she edited and published several books. She was a devoted historian and author. Her books described our local history and people. In 2002 the Wyoming Stockgrowers Association bestowed the "Guardian of Our Heritage" award for her history endeavors.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and her husband. She is survived by her sons, John and Brock of Kaycee, Danny and Jeb of Lusk and two daughters, Katheryn Williams and Julie Haines of Kaycee. Eleven grandchildren and one great-grandson also survive.

Memorials may be made to the Hoofprints of the Past Museum in Kaycee or the Jim Gatchell Museum in Buffalo.
