Clarabelle Payne

Memorial services for former Lusk resident, Clarabelle Payne, 83, were held on Jan. 2, 2010 in Mojave California. Burial of cremains, was with her husband at the National Cemetery in Riverside, Calif. Clarabelle passed away on Dec. 29, 2009 in Lancaster, Calif., following a short illness.

Clarabelle was born in the Lusk, Wyo. to Ralph and Frances (VanBlarcum) Berge on Aug. 27, 1926. Clarabelle married C. V. "Bud" Payne on Feb. 12, 1944 in Lusk. They were the parents of two daughters, Connie Rae, born April 20, 1947 and Marilyn Kay, born Nov. 18, 1950.

Bud and Clarabelle farmed in the Cedar Top Community for a while after they were married. The family moved to Lusk in the 1950's, where she was a homemaker. She later assisted in the operation of Bud's Laundry, which they operated for a time. After working for a time in Sioux City, Iowa at a clothing manufacturing plant, she and her family formed a gospel singing group, God's Family Singers, which toured the United States for several years. Clarabelle played the electric piano in the group and could bring any church to life with her music. The family eventually settled in Mojave, Calif., where Clarabelle became active in her church. She also worked as a teacher in the Christian School where her daughter, Marilyn served as principal.

Clarabelle was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Olin Berg, a sister Jean Robinson, and both daughters, Connie Brott, and Marilyn Skelton.

She is survived by her sisters, Violet Carnes of California and Gerry Tollman of Lusk, an aunt Ginny Swope of Lusk, seven grand children, several great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
