Michael J. Ruffing Dies At Crawford

Michael J. Ruffing, 64, former resident of Hat Creek and a nephew of Christ Ruffing, died at the Community Memorial Hospital in Crawford Monday, July 4, after a lingering illness.

Funeral services were held Thursday morning, July 7, at St. John's Catholic Church in Crawford with Rev. Father Daniel Devine officiating. Interment was in the Crawford Catholic Cemetery with full military honors.

Mr. Ruffing was born November 27, 1890, the son of John and Elizabeth Ruffing, in Hartford, Wis. He came to this vicinity when 16 years old and worked on ranches for several years, finally filing on a homestead at Hat Creek. Here he lived until 1917, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served one year in France and after being discharged in July, 1918, he returned to northwestern Nebraska.

April 16, 1923, he married Miss Edith Serres at the Catholic Church in Lusk. The family moved to a farm southwest of Crawford in 1928 and has lived there ever since.

In his immediate family he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Edith Ruffing; one son, William; and two daughters, Mrs. Betty Porter and Mrs. Jean Hissam, all of Crawford; eight grandchildren, two sisters and a brother.
